SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR UMPIRES REGARDING COMPOSITE BATS:
No doubt you have heard of the changes in our rules regarding composite bats. The new rule is stated on the home page of this web site.
First of all, you should understand that our primary goal is SAFETY! Secondly, as an umpire, you really don't need to worry about enforcement of this rule. The burden is on the coaches, not the umpire. We suggest that as you are introduce yourself to the Managers, and clarifying any rules at pregame, the plate umpire should categorically ask each coach "are your players using legal bats and are they properly equipped?"
This puts the responsibility on each coach to send kids up to bat with legal bats and approved equipment. With that preamble declared at the pregame meeting, should an opposing coach challenge a bats' legality, (or worse, somebody get hurt due to improper equipment) it's no longer up to the umpire to legislate what is legal or not...it'll be up to a league director. No kid umpire should have to memorize that endless list of legal bats on the IHSA or Little League web sites.
